Livable Design in the Kitchen

The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence

For many families, the kitchen represents more than just the space where meals are prepared. It’s the room where homework is done, spirited discussions are had, and a house turns into a home. In fact, there may be no other room that sees more activity and foot traffic than the kitchen. That’s why making sure your kitchen suits the needs of all members of your family is important for creating a home for a lifetime. Here is just a sample of how you can create a kitchen space that your entire range of family members and friends can enjoy.

1. Counter Tops of Varying Heights

Who doesn’t love a little extra help in the kitchen? Installing a peninsula or island with multiple levels can accommodate family members of all heights, and perhaps more importantly, your kids will have no excuses when it comes to helping out in the kitchen! Additionally, different countertop levels can better accommodate those who are more comfortable sitting when preparing food, or those who just wish to sit and chat while others prepare the meal.

2. Diverse Lighting Sources

Do you have trouble seeing in your kitchen in the evening when there is less natural light? You may want to supplement that natural light with lighting fixtures placed directly over the sink, stove and other work areas (also known as task lighting) to make work in the kitchen easier and safer.

3. Shelving and Cabinetry

If you have just standard, fixed shelving throughout your kitchen, you’ve most likely noticed that it’s harder to reach the pots and pans stored in the bottom cabinetry. One way to remedy that situation is by installing pull-out drawers, and for corner cabinets, Lazy Susans. Lastly, having D-or U-shaped pulls rather than round knobs can make it easier to grasp and open your drawers and cabinets.
