Livable Design Ideas for the Exterior of Your Home

Creating a home for a lifetime doesn’t just mean you need to consider remodeling the interior of your house. In fact, the exterior of your home can play a major part in your livable design solutions. What’s more, some of these changes can help beautify the outside aesthetic of your home, adding to your home’s curb appeal, and pleasing the neighbors in the process!

Entryways

One basic – yet important – question to ask yourself when considering livable home design solutions is whether it is easy for your family members and visitors to enter your home? Your entryways should be 36 inches wide to allow ample space to move through.

Ideally, you should have at least one step-free entrance into your home, particularly important for any relatives or visitors in a wheelchair or pushing a baby stroller. In addition, if you have steps leading up to your home, you should install railings on both sides of the steps to provide sufficient support for those who need it.

The Front Door

When someone knocks at your door, particularly when you’re not expecting visitors, wouldn’t you rather check to see who it is first before opening your door?

Make it easier for you and your family to play gatekeeper by installing a front door that either has windows, a peephole or a slide latch. Any of these design solutions will make it easier for you to check who’s knocking at your door, helping to ensure the safety of your family.

Walkways

The last thing that should ever happen is someone stumbling or tripping before they have even made it through your front door. Ensure that the path or walkway to your home has a smooth, even surface and remember to clear it of debris periodically. It’s especially important to watch out for loose bricks or bits of pavement.
