Tips for Cleaning Your Kwanzaa Kinara

Danielle Gunraj

Now that the Kwanzaa festivities are over, your kinara is sure to be covered in wax. Check out our tips for cleaning your wood, metal, or glass kinara.

  • Use an ice cube to freeze the wax. Then scrape off the hardened wax with a credit card or similar object. Be gentle and don’t use anything sharp to remove the wax or you’ll risk damaging the kinara.
  • Mix equal parts water and white vinegar. Using a soft, clean cloth, wipe the surface of the kinara with this solution. Change the cloth for a new one if the wax begins to build up on it. After you’ve removed the wax, dampen a clean cloth with plain water and wipe down the wood to remove any excess cleanser. Then, dry the wood by wiping it down with a dry cloth. If a more abrasive cleaner is required, mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 1 tablespoon of cream of tartar.
  • Use a wax-removing spray or polish. Be sure to read the instructions before use.

  • You can use an ice cube here too, but placing the kinara in the freezer instead will cut down on cleanup time. Once the wax is frozen, gently scrape it off with a credit card or spatula.
  • You can also place the kinara in your oven at its lowest setting to melt the wax. Be sure to place it on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper to collect the drippings.
  • Once you’ve frozen or melted off the wax, buff the kinara with a used dryer sheet to restore the metal’s normal luster.

  • Use a credit card or spoon to dislodge excess wax. Remove any remaining residue using household glass cleaner and a soft, clean cloth.
  • Place the kinara in a hot water bath. Here again, use a credit card to remove the softened wax.
  • Use a hairdryer to melt the wax and buff it off with a cloth. Be careful not to overheat the glass.

We hope these tips are helpful and that you and your family had a Joyous Kwanzaa.
